Million Dollar Traders: Lex Van Dam and his million dollar TV gamble
Lex Van Dam is taking $1m of his own money and letting eight novices invest it on the stock market, He tells Serena Davies why?
The premise sounds insane. In Million Dollar Traders, the BBC2 series that’s being described as a high finance version of The Apprentice, a hedge fund manager gives eight novices $1million of his own money to trade on the stock exchange. His rookie traders include an ex-vet, a boxing promoter and a corner-shop owner. They have eight weeks to make a profit (shown over three TV episodes). The group gets “City-size bonuses” if they do so, and into the bad books of moneybags himself, the marvellously named Lex Van Dam, if they muck up. Oh, and the series was filmed last July and August, just as the credit crisis escalated.
