NeoMedia and Scanbuy Reach Settlement and License Agreement
U.S. Mobile Barcode Market Aligned for Growth
ATLANTA & NEW YORK, Oct 20, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Today NeoMedia Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB: NEOM), and Scanbuy, Inc., leaders in mobile barcode technology, announced they have settled all pending litigation between the companies and have granted non-exclusive patent licenses to each other.
NeoMedia and Scanbuy have agreed to terminate all pending litigation brought by NeoMedia against Scanbuy in 2004, and by Scanbuy and Marshall Feature Recognition, LLC ("MFR") against NeoMedia in 2008.
In addition, NeoMedia has granted Scanbuy a royalty bearing, non-exclusive license to a portion of its patent portfolio in the U.S. In turn, Scanbuy has granted NeoMedia a fully paid, irrevocable, non-exclusive license of Scanbuy patents and a fully paid, non-exclusive sublicense to all of the patents licensed by MFR to Scanbuy within the U.S.
This agreement will enable consumer brands, advertising agencies and mobile operators to confidently engage with either company to implement mobile barcode solutions in the U.S. The technology has enormous potential to become a viable and widely adopted communication channel.
"The agreement between NeoMedia and Scanbuy removes the final roadblock to rapid commercialization of mobile barcodes in the US," commented Iain McCready, Chief Executive Officer of NeoMedia. "We are literally dropping the green flag for brands, retailers and mobile operators to join the race towards mobile barcodes becoming a fixture in every consumer's daily routine."
"We are pleased that Scanbuy has reached a fair agreement with NeoMedia, and look forward to working with our partners to build a vibrant business in the United States," said Jonathan Bulkeley, Chief Executive Officer of Scanbuy. "Both companies have invested a great deal in our intellectual property and we will continue to bring these solutions to leading marketers, wireless operators, and handset manufacturers around the world."

NEOMEDIA EUROPE AND IQ MOBILE CONNECT TELE.RING WITH YOUTH MARKET
Vienna, October 19, 2009 – NeoMedia Europe AG, the leader in mobile barcode and scanning technology, today announces the successful completion of a youth-focused mobile barcode project across Austria. The campaign, delivered in partnership with the Alps and Southeast Europe mobile marketing specialist IQ mobile on behalf of Austrian operator tele.ring, impressively yielded a click rate of 0.5% which in turn led to a 51.3% download conversion rate.
The campaign launched in May 2009 with a series of attention-grabbing posters and encouraged students at 263 schools where the posters appeared, to send a free SMS to download the NeoReader – which 250 students did in the first five days of the campaign. With NeoReader enabled, they were able to scan the barcode which appeared on the posters in order to connect directly to the campaign site where they could access free mobile content such as ringtones and wallpapers.
Interestingly, with 75% of all clicks coming from non tele.ring handsets, the campaign proved successful in connecting tele.ring with an audience outside of its established customer base. Research conducted since the completion of the project suggests that brand recognition for the campaign stands at an impressive 80%.
Austria benefits from one of the most advanced mobile markets in Europe and this initiative was pivotal in extending the ubiquity of mobile barcodes and creating all-important ease of use. The secondary school demographic provided the optimum sounding board for this campaign given students susceptibility to nascent tech trends and the popularity of ringtone downloads.
Highlighting the importance of the campaign, Dr. Christian Steinborn, CEO of NeoMedia Europe AG, said: “The results of the tele.ring campaign show the undisputed ease of adoption of mobile barcodes, especially for the youth market which is already mobile, alert and interested in new technologies and new ways of doing things. This is important in demonstrating how mobile barcodes are becoming a force to be reckoned with in the move towards opt-in pull marketing. The growing ubiquity of a tech savvy consumer and advanced smartphone technology will only do more to drive the market.”
Drawing on the successes of the campaign, Harald Winkelhofer, Founder and CEO IQ mobile, added: “tele.ring is famous for its unconventional form of communication, and NeoMedia’s technology provided the most innovative and measurable way for tapping into the youth market. The rapid downloading of the code reader software enabled the impressive click rate of 0.51%, which stands well above the average click rate for ‘traditional’ online advertising last recorded as being 0.19%*. This then converted into a content download conversion rate of 51.3% - a figure which undoubtedly shows that combining ambient with mobile, whilst drawing on the popularity of free media downloads, is a winning combination.”

NEWS 2D Barcodes Come to Latin America
Oct. 13, 2009
Business Editors
http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20091013005663&newsLang=en
MADRID & ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 13, 2009--Bems, the leading Spanish
company in mobile solutions based on 2D barcodes, has partnered with US-based
NeoMedia Technologies to distribute 2D barcode solutions throughout Latin
America. Earlier today, Bems announced it had been chosen by Telefnica
International as its exclusive partner to develop a 2D barcode business in
Latin America for the next 4 years.
Bems has chosen NeoMedia as their primary technology and platform vendor for
mobile barcode reading and campaign management, with a key focus on the brand
marketing and advertising sectors. In addition, Bems will promote NeoMedia
hardware solutions related to ticketing and couponing. As a key part of this
platform, NeoReader will be the preferred barcode reader for pre-installation
on handsets and all code transactions will be routed through the NeoMedia
infrastructure. The solution will be distributed to markets including
Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico,
Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Venezuela and Uruguay.
This initiative to promote 2D barcode technology is part of a wider
strategic plan for the operators to introduce cutting edge tools for mobile to
the Latin-American market. Operators will leverage the expertise the
Bems/NeoMedia partnership provides in areas such as technology, marketing, R+D
and an extensive sales force to enable the widespread adoption of this
technology.
"The alliance with NeoMedia represents an important step towards delivering
the best technology to Bems and providing an advantaged position in the
implementation of the agreements with Telefnica for the Latin-American
market," commented Javier Maas, Chairman of Bems.
Based in Madrid, Spain, Bems is known as the go-to company for 2D barcodes
and has developed solutions for a wide range of brands, distributors,
intermediaries, public and private institutions, retailers and media groups. It
has worked with some of the world's most influential organizations - from
Warner Brothers to Yell and Bacardi. Bems strives to unite best of breed
technology with creativity to achieve the best results for its clients.
NeoMedia Technologies, Inc. (OTC BB: NEOM) based in Atlanta, Georgia is the
global leader in mobile barcode scanning solutions. NeoMedia's technology
allows mobile devices with cameras to read 1D and 2D barcodes and provide "one
click" access to mobile content. Combining this technology with advanced
analytics and reporting capabilities revolutionizes the way advertisers market
to mobile consumers.
"As we've consistently maintained, commercialization of barcodes calls for
an open and interoperable market that can provide the scale needed for brands
and advertisers to exploit the benefits of the mobile marketplace. We feel that
our work with Bems and gaining entry to the Latin American market is yet
another step closer to global adoption of this powerful technology," commented
Iain McCready, CEO of NeoMedia.
The 2D barcode market is increasingly gathering momentum as its potential as
both a valuable marketing tool and the ideal way of delivering services via the
mobile web are being realized.
Bems and NeoMedia will implement the interoperable standard of 2D barcodes
based on the recommendations of the GSM Association, guaranteeing compatibility
with other global operators, not only in Latin America, but also throughout the
rest of the world.
To succeed with this new "2D barcode Ecosystem," the active participation of
all industry players from operators and manufacturers of mobile devices to
developers and mobile marketers is needed. Bems will aim to create models of
collaboration with all of them and to generate the scale that is needed for the
space to develop to its full potential.
It is expected that operators in Latin America signalling their commitment
to an open operating environment via this initiative will lead the way to
unifying the marketplace and encourage other operators and brands to invest in
mobile barcoding as a marketing channel.
Mobile penetration in Latin America (and the Caribbean region) stands well
above the global average - it was judged in early 2009 that penetration stood
at 80% compared to a global average of 58%.1 With 458 million people across
Latin America and the Caribbean owning a mobile phone (more than four times the
number with a fixed line phone), the region holds approximately 12% of the
world's 3.97 billion mobile subscribers.2 Several countries, including
Argentina, Uruguay, and Venezuela have passed the 100% penetration threshold.3
While Latin America's Mobile Internet market is currently not highly developed,
it is anticipated to grow at an annual rate of more than 85 percent through
2012 (compared with a global average of 16 percent).4

NeoMedia Europe Further Strengthens Mobile Barcode Adoption in Austria NeoMedia Europe Further Strengthens Mobile Barcode Adoption in Austria
NeoMedia Europe AG, the leader in mobile barcode and scanning technology, continues to enjoy success across Austria and today announces the completion of three key projects, all with leading brands, across what is already Europe’s most advanced mobile market.
Dorbirner Messe, a leading organizer of trade fairs in Austria, first engaged with NeoMedia in the spring of 2009 when it used 2D codes in the promotional campaign for its spring exhibition “Frühjahrsmesse”. Following the success of this campaign, NeoMedia and partner Philipp (a mobile solution and services provider), have just completed the Autumn Fair in Dornbirn. The autumn project involved issuing all exhibitors their own 2D barcode linked directly to their personal mobile subpage. These barcodes were displayed across a wide range of media including transport; employee t-shirts; and regional print media.
Another successful partnership with Philipp has most recently seen NeoMedia provide 2D barcodes to the promotional materials of Die Grüne Alternative Vorarlberg, the Austrian Green Party. 2D barcodes displayed on billboards; print ads; and party brochures allowed the electorate to directly access further information on the green party during the regional elections that took place over the summer months. The party didn’t engage with mobile barcodes as a means to increase their share of the vote, but rather to demonstrate their use of innovative methods of connecting with the electorate.
Similarly seeking to demonstrate innovation, leading Austrian newspaper WirtschaftsBlatt was keen to explore how mobile barcodes could extend its readers' experience of the paper while becoming an early adopter of the technology in the print media sector. Working with DIMOCO, NeoMedia demonstrated how a special compact edition of the paper (WirtschaftsBlatt Kompaktspezial) could be produced with 2D barcodes integrated into the pages that would allow the reader to access additional editorial and audio content, to suit their interests.
Speaking on the successful completion of the three projects, Dr. Christian Steinborn, CEO of NeoMedia Europe AG, said: “Austria already benefits from one of the most advanced mobile markets in Europe, and we have previously engaged with other leading brands here including Nokia, Mazda and Tele.ring on 2D barcode projects. The completion of three more projects further highlights Austrian businesses appreciation of the benefits to customer engagement that mobile marketing can provide.”
